  2. I look overboard at the crashing sea. A storm is brewing and the wind is picking up. My messy red hair blows in to my face. I pull it back and walk down into the cabin below where my dad is planning the trip. I'm only in my nightgown and it's breezy, so I hold down my dress and walk down the wet, steep, steps. "Dad?" I call. The group of men with Dad turn to me. "Leif we don't have time for this." One man says. "One second." he tells him. He gets and walks to me. He bends over, "What's wrong?"
"I had a nightmare. I went upstairs to find you but you weren't there."
"Well I'll just tuck you back in, ok?"
    "Ok."
We headed back to the sleeping quarters for me and my dad. The other men were in a different room.
"I miss Mom." I say as I get back into my tiny bed.
"So do I. But you know, it was her time." He says as he pulls up my thin, cotton blanket on to me.
    "Yep."

  8. I think that they are looking at a run down ship with some goods in it or they see a chest from the ship. That has broken down from the ship.

    ReplyDelete

    1. The chest holds a map to the lands beyond. Their quest depends on the map, they must retrieve it!

      Delete
    2. OK I was wondering what would be in that chest. And the hole ship was looking at the the tip of there toes. That was also suspicious.

  11. The waves are crashing against the ship and the rigid cold is dreadful. I'm on my first voyage. My cousin is chief, he's the youngest one this tribe. He's troubled because we're lost

    1. The storm keeps getting worse and worse, and I haven't seen my cousin, Leif, since we started our voyage. I'm starting to get more and more worried. I decide to go below deck.
It's much calmer below deck, less wet and nausiating. It feels good be in a calmer environment. As I'm walking around trying to find him, the floor boards creak underneath my feet. Then out of nowhere, a huge wave strikes the boat. I'm slammed into the side of he boat. Leaving me unstable and my side throbbing. I keep walking.
Finally, I find him, exept he lying on the floor unconcious. He must have hit his head on the wall when the wave slammed into the boat. At least we're dry. I walk over to him, his head is has a wound, its streaming blood. I rip a strip of cloth from my wool jacket and wrap it around his head, stopping the steady blood flow. Then I heave him up onto his bed, laying him on his back.
I ran back up deck but as I'm climbing the stairs, another wave hits, once again slamming me into the hard wood wall. Now my head hurts, great, I get up and run to the deck. I call out "Leif is unconcious" "I'll be you your capti untill he wakes up".

    2. I know I have a huge responsibility to get the boat and crew to our next destination safely. Leif has not moved in a long time and I am beginning to worry that he will not wake up. I hear the sailors complaining that I am not stepping up and steering the crew in the right direction. Oh, I wish I had been more observant as a young boy, watched the ways of the sailor's world. Well, here goes, I will take charge!

  13. Their is land ahead. Keep sailing and you will reach it. If you stop the wind and waves will destroy your boat. Sail a little bit to the east and the wind will help blow you to shore.

    1. Our journey has been uneventful up until now, this storm is scary and dangerous. Our quest to find new lands may take longer than expected if the storm blows us off course. I think often of my family, I hope they are well.

  15. There is a bad storm ahead for the crew, which is causing the waves to crash up against the boat. The crew is worried that they might not make it to Newfoundland, they run around the boat making sure that everything will go smoothly for them and protect the ship. The other part of our group has drifted far away from us. Will we ever see them again?

    1. I can hear the howling of the wind, the waves throw the boat up in the air. As we came crashing down I see another ship in the distance but it does not look good. The mast is broken and I see things floating about. Are they crew members or just pieces of ship. My heart is heavy with fear.

  17. Leif Ericson has gathered a crew to sail west and will eventually find what is now known as Canada.

  18. My name is Leif Ericson, and I am the captain of this crew. We are fierce Norse men, on a journey to get away from our crowded country of Scandinavia. We are following a route my father, Eric the Red, travelled on his journey away from the law. We will go farther than any Scandinavian has before.

    1. I have left my country feeling strong and confident. We will succeed and come back heroes! The weather ahead looks stormy, we will not let it get the better of us. We are Vikings after all and we are not afraid!

  19. There is a large wave heading towards the boat, will we live? Now the rain is dripping into the boat making small, shallow puddles. We are all getting a cold this is not good. I hope we can get to our new homeland.

    1. The water continues to fill the boat. Suddenly we realize that if we don't start emptying the water we will sink and most likely drown. I quickly grab a container and start emptying the water, this will take awhile. I am joined by one other crew member and together we work at riding the boat of the extra water. My arms are sore and my back aches but I must continue on.

    1. Ah, the song of courage and yet deep down in the hearts of all men was the fear of the unknown, the fear of death. Was it better to die at sea, exploring new lands, or to die at home?

  22. Everything had been fine and the waters had been calm until the storm began. The winds are howling and our mast is cracked. For sure we will die out here there is no hope. We have sailed way off course and now we will never see land. Unless...

  28. It looks like the leader is commanding for something. The crew is rowing and right about to fight or battle. The waves are getting roof on the crew too. The leader is not that impressed with the crew he has on his ship. Or the are returning from a battle and the leader is very mad about how they lost the battle. Then he asks for the second man to get rid of someone off of his ship. The second man says are you sheer. He commands the second man to do so.

  29. The clouds darkened in the sky above us. We heard thunder, then lighting! Then the sail was struck with lightening. A fire started and the life boats were on fire too. We were trapped! There was no way off the ship. We had to jump. We sent the youngest men first then the older then me. Leif Erikson was the last to jump off. We had to swim to shore. All of a sudden a big piece of wood fell off the shipand landed on twelve men. They didn't make it. They drowned. There were only 3 of us left we started swimming to shore. Two other men were so tired that they also drowned so they were also gone. There was no one else but me. Leif the lucky. Three days later I made it. l was starving but I was still alive. The land I had reached a land that was all berry bushes but they looked like vines. I called it Vinland.

  30. "Land AHOY!" Leif Erikssion shouted as they neared America. His crew of vikings shouted with joy but as soon as their ship touched America a big, scaly, green sea monster burst out of the water and swallowed the ship whole.
"I knew I shouldn't have come!" a poor viking shouted. They are dead... or are they really? Remember, I said the monster swallowed their ship. The sea monster didn't eat them remember? Suddenly a sword from the inside, started to cut a jagged circle and Leif Eriksson burst from the inside in a shower of blood. His crew staggered out and ran over to the land.
"'Leif the lucky, Leif the lucky!" They stared to chant.

  39. "watch out" one of my crew member yells to me.
I look over my shoulder and see the largest wave in my life. Me and my crew team cling to the railing so we wont be rocked off the ship.
The next morning I wake up and look over the bow of the ship, land, I see land. I wake up all my crew members. Soon enough everyone was awake, we grab our map and cant seem to find where we are on the map. We must have been off course during the storm last night one of my crew members said.
I keep thinking of those six words; we must have been blown off course.
